Glyn Jenkins: A Profile in Educational Leadership

The Early Years...

Glyn's early career in the United Kingdom served as the bedrock upon which his diverse instructional and leadership skills were built, shaping his adaptable and innovative approach to education. His academic foundations include a First Class B.A. in Performing Arts & Business Administration with IT from the University of Manchester and a Post Graduate Teaching Certificate from Liverpool.

From 2002 to 2007, he served at Parklands High School in Liverpool, where he demonstrated remarkable versatility by teaching English, History, and Performing Arts. It was here that he took his first formal step into leadership as the Head of Film Studies for 11th and 12th-grade students. This unique multidisciplinary experience gave him an interdisciplinary perspective on curriculum and an early understanding of how to engage students through multiple modalities.

Combined with his background in business administration and IT, this period cultivated a holistic aptitude for designing the pedagogical and organizational systems necessary to lead effective programs in the United States. His journey would next take him from leading in the classroom to building programs and shaping culture.

Building Programs and Shaping Culture in American Schools

Effective middle-level leaders are instrumental in designing curriculum, developing programs, and shaping a school's core ethos. Glyn’s work in New York and Seattle represents a period of significant growth and impact in these critical areas.

As Department Head at the British International School of New York from 2008 to 2011, he was responsible for designing inquiry-based curricula and skillfully aligning the Math department with the rigorous International Baccalaureate (I.B.) pedagogical approach.

His multifaceted contributions at Westside School in Seattle (2011-2016) further solidified his reputation as a transformative leader. His key accomplishments during this time include:

• Pioneering a New Middle School: Glyn was a key leader on the teacher team that successfully architected a brand-new middle school program from the ground up, seamlessly extending an established elementary school into a comprehensive K-8 institution.

• Developing Student Pathways: He developed the school's high school guidance counseling program from scratch, creating systems to support graduating eighth-grade families through the complex application process. In this role, he fostered strong relationships with admissions departments at private, public, and boarding schools throughout the Seattle area and beyond.

• Implementing Character Education: He reconfigured the advisory program by leading a team to implement a Character Education and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum. This strategic initiative cultivated a more positive, academic-focused school culture and laid the essential groundwork for a school-wide growth mindset philosophy.

This proven ability to build effective programs and foster strong communities demonstrated his capacity for even deeper, more integrated school leadership.

4. Deepening Impact Through Community-Focused Leadership

Teacher leadership is a powerful catalyst for driving sustainable, school-wide change. Glyn's tenure at Federal Way Public Schools since 2017 stands as a masterclass in this form of leadership, where he consistently went beyond the classroom to serve the entire school community. By concurrently leading and serving on the school’s PLC, PBIS, and Site Equity teams, he drove a unified strategy for school improvement, ensuring that instructional coaching, positive behavior systems, and equity initiatives were fully integrated and mutually reinforcing.

His dedication to fostering strong family partnerships was further underscored by his service as PTA President and Treasurer and his leadership in organizing Exhibitions of Learning, developing immersive Student-Led Conference formats, facilitating parent education evenings, and producing community-building events like theater productions and book fairs.

Among his most impactful programmatic achievements during this period was the implementation of a whole-school online number sense and math fluency program. This initiative, complete with professional development support for his colleagues, dramatically increased student engagement with mathematics. The program's success was widely recognized, with fellow teachers frequently sharing reports of "exponential growth in math fact fluency" with all staff. This success in leading colleagues and achieving measurable results positioned him perfectly for the challenges of formal school administration.
